Participation is mandatory and will count towards the course grade. You are expected to provide a substantial comment of several well-written paragraphs in each session and a similar comment or reflection in reply to at least two other students' contribution. Statements such as "I agree" or "good post" will not count as a reply.
(1) Now that we are at the half-way mark of the class, I have enjoyed it. At first, I cringed at the thought of taking another math class. But so far, it's been very interesting.
One thing that I really enjoy is the Limespring program. I like how it walks you through step by step through each subject. The short quizzes and workbook help to before the exam.
My "keep-quit-start" resolution would be to "keep it up and try my best, quit procrastinating on some things, and quit rushing through lessons when I'm in a hurry".
The thing that I'm doing to help myself learn is to look at the big picture and why I'm going back to school and getting my Bachelor's. I see my girls and they give me drive and focus to keep moving forward to reach my goals.
The thing that I'm doing that is hindering me from learning in this class is probably my time management. I need to get better at planning my day. I recently just started a new full-time job so just the transition of balancing work, family and school.
The most interesting thing you have learned so far is the Module 3 of Probability and Uncertainty. That seemed to be the easiest and most interesting for me to pick up on.
(2) At first, I was quite nervous to take a math course online. In the past I have that I often need a lot of validation and progress checks while learning new concepts to ensure that I am making the right connections and associations. I will say that it is not as easy for to type out a question to send to the instructor as it would be for me to just raise my hand and ask questions in the middle of a class or ask for clarification about something before or after a class. When I get to a point where I feel that I need to double check something I usually doa little google search to read about a term or concept and then see what you tube videos are available to dig into something a little deeper if needed. This class has not been nearly as difficult or challenging as I anticipated it being.With that being said I think that higher level math courses could be very challenging for me in an online format.
I greatly appreciate that there is no penalization for making mistakes during the quiz and workbook portion. I believe that failure is a critical part of learning, and I am glad that there is an opportunity to go back and take quizzes again and again until you reach 100%.I also am glad that the same holds true for the workbook portion. It helps me to better learn the material and make proper associations and connections when I can go back and reference the lessons to complete a ssignments.
I think it would be an improvement to the course if more time was spent defining specific concepts, equations, and how to recognize what type of problem it is and then apply the appropriate equation to solve. I have found that the wording in some of the test questions has left me in doubt with which equation to select. I feel that I have a good grasp of the concepts and how to work the equations through, but I have made errors on selecting the wrong equation for the situation.One example of this was replacement vs no replacement when presented as a problem in the test. From my memory all the practice questions and examples made clear distinctions in the narrative explaining if there was replacement or not. I found that on the test this question did not specify so I assumed that it was with replacement, and this was an incorrect assumption. I understand the difference between the two and how to solve each appropriately, but I failed to select the correct one for this scenario.
I am going to keep taking my time as I work through the concepts. I am going to keep watching you tube videos and double-checking definitions as I work to cement my understanding of new material.
I am going to quit rushing through the weekly tests. I get so excited and find that I usually complete the entire test in around 10 to 15 minutes. I really should slow down and take my time so that I do not complete simple errors.
The most interesting thing I have learned so far is that factorials increase at an enormous rate.
3!=6
4!=24
5!=120
6!=720
This kind of blows my mind.
