You have recently joined a civil engineering firm that is just starting a new water supply project inNorthern Amman. The project consists of many tasks, and you were appointed to accomplish tasks 1, 2and3 as follows:

The selected area in Northern Amman is to be served by a water distribution network that will recive itswater from a nearby pumping station located as shown in figure 1 below. The water will be first flowingin a concrete lined channle on a bed slope of 0.5%, carrying a flow rate of 25 m3/s. Then reaching anunderground pumping station where it will be lifted up to reach the community via the water distributionnetwork. Knowing that Jordan has recently suffered from climate change where Summer temperatureshaveincreasedand winter has becomecolder.

The water leaving the pumping station is carried in a pipe to an upstream reservoir where it will then bedistributed into a pipe network. The elevation difference between the two reservoirs A and B is 20 m,andthe pipes parametersareasfollows, knowing thatthe pipes arecastiron (new):

Submittal/Deliverable:
  1. After studying the relationship between water viscosity and temperature, taking temperature range from 5 to 50 ⁰C. Evaluate the relationship and determine the parameters that affect it (Refer toexperiment1 as well).
  2. Find the flow rate and pump head between the two reservoirs if two pumps in series and two pumps in parallel are used. Compare the findings using both systems highlighting the merits of different solutions.
  3. Illustrateyoursingle, twopumpsin parallelandtwo pumpsinseries layoutsproperly.
  4. Find the total head loss for the pipe system connecting between reservoirs A and B. Use DarcyWeisbachapproachforthemajorhead losscalculation.(Refer also toheadlossexperiment)
  5. For the same pipe in section 1.4 find the major head loss using Manning equation. Discuss thedifferencesandsimilaritiesbetweenthethreeapproachesforheadlosscalculations(DarcyWeisbach,Hazen Williams and Manning).
