You have to design a network between 7 cities, (A thru F are arranged forming an hexagon and the seventh "G" is the center). Consider carefully the design restrictions because you have a limited number of components and the fiber distance is also a limitation.
- There will be an optical switch in each city that supports 4 ports. Each port is a pair of fibers, one for transmission and the other for reception.
- Each fiber supports 3 colors ( C1 to C3)
- Each switch can handle 12 independent connections ( 4 ports, 3 colors each)
- One port must be reserved for the traffic destination in the city, the remaining three are for long distance.
- The max distance for a fiber link with no amplifiers is 100 KM
- All distances between neighbor cities are 100 km (not the actual logic links or light-paths). Of course some cities will be at 200 km or more.
- There are only 4 EDFA available.
- Create a design that will allow at least four lightpath connections from each city to other 4 . (Only 3 fiber pairs allowed to terminate in a city but each fiber carries multiple colors)
- Remember that a lightpath only connects two cities at the end and cannot be shared with a third.
- Include the total cost of your solution for bonus 10 points:
- The cost of a switch is $100K, an amplifier is $50K, 100km of fiber are $1M. (grating cost is not considered)
Provide:
- Diagram of a switch design with a detailed structure that will be installed in each city. Consider the ports, wavelenghth split/merge into fibers, and fabric)
- Map or diagram of city connections illustrating the physical fiber connectivity between switches (include the local port)
- Color links between different cities (when they are not directly attached through a direct fiber, try to avoid interference)
- IF you encounter a situation where it is impossible to establish a lightpath due to resource limit or blocking please explain clearly the reason.
- -Turn in scanned procedure before deadline.
