The United State currently operates on a mixed economic system. This can be described as a system "that features characteristics of both capitalism and socialism" (Ross, 2019). A mixed economic systems protects private property and free trade, but allows regular government regulation and intervention (Ross, 2019). The United States' mixed economic system is a combination of the market capitalist structure prior to the Great Depression and the Keynesian economics policies that were adopted to revitalize the country. Japan and the United Kingdom both operate as mixed economies as well. One major difference, however, is the role corporations play in the policy making of these three countries. The business sector in the US has more flexibility and presence in the political and economic sphere. This is done through lobbying, or "seeking to influence economic policy in their own favor" (Chappelow, 2020). And so while the US's mixed economy is comparable to that of the UK's and Japan's in terms of overall structure, the influence of corporations is where they differ.
