You are a registered tax agent and for Azure Accountants and Financial Services. Rashaad Dean has been a client for some time and attended your office to have their 2023 tax return prepared. Rashaad is 28 years old single resident taxpayer employed by Pike Computer Company and has the following documentation: Payment Summary for the period 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023 from Pike Computer Company. Gross Wages $86,000 Entertainment $400 Travel and accommodation $5,200 Tax Instalments Deducted $19,000 Redundancy payment $75000. The redundancy payment occurred on the last day of the financial year. Rashaad had been employed with the previous employer for 11 years. Various receipts Table 2 Rashaads receipts Date Paid to Particulars $ 30 June 2022 Australian Institute for IT Professionals Yearly membership fee $950 3 August 2022 Jetstar Airfare for holiday trip but had to visit 2 clients $2,500 1 September 2022 Diabetes Australia Donation $180 1 October 2022 Tax Agent 2021 tax return preparation fee $800 15 October Speeding fine Travelling for business purposes $280 1 December 2022 Jess PCs Laptop (50% work use with effective life of 3 years) $3,200 1 February 2023 Entertainment Entertaining clients $1,200 1 March 2023 Co-op bookstore Textbooks for prescribed computer course $800 Rashaad has also provided the following additional information: 1) Rashaad has to use the car for work to travel to clients premises to sort out any installation issues resulting from their installed equipment. The company reimburses Rashaad for fuel at 30cents per Km. Rashaad has not maintained a logbook for the vehicle, and has travelled 13,400km from work to clients premises during the year. Rashaad travelled a total of 30,000km in the year and the total motor vehicle expenses were $ 12,000 for the year. Rashaad has receipts to support the motor vehicle costs. 2) Rashaad advises you they spent $600 on maintaining their uniform which is compulsory for their job and has the company design which is registered with Austrade. He insists that you claim this amount. 3) Rashaad held $3,000 for the whole year in an interest-bearing account but insists that they did not receive any interest during the year. Rashaad has not supplied any bank statements. Role of the student being assessed During your role play you must demonstrate the following skills: Use active listening and questioning techniques to clarify information and confirm understanding Consult with client to determine tax documentation preparation requirements Gather current data from authoritative sources, and identify and resolve outstanding information requirements through consultation with client Identify assessable income and allowable deductions Advise client of current tax obligations As the Tax Agent, you are required to conduct a short interview (maximum 10 minutes) with your client Rashaad and advise them of their estimated taxable income for the year ended 30 June 2023. In your interview include the following: estimated taxable income /tax payable/refund the allowable deductions that Rashaad may claim further information required to finalise the return
