You need to prepare an individual analysis report (using Microsoft Word), which requires an amount of computer work and written comment. You may need to seek guidance from your lecturer in the class. Do not leave things until too late!! Each task describes what you are required to do, so please follow these carefully! In this report, you will analyse a randomised subset of a survey. This subset only has three variables, namely read [reading score], female [gender: 0 and 1 denotes male and female respectively], and write [writing score]. Task 1: Identify data type State for each variable in the subset whether it is qualitative or quantitative; if it is qualitative, state whether it is nominal or ordinal, and if it is quantitative, state whether it is discrete or continuous. Task 2: Perform descriptive summary of the variable write a. Find the sample mean and sample standard deviation as well as the 5-number summary of the variable write. b. Create a boxplot showing the distribution of the variable write. Comment upon the shape of the distribution, i.e., either symmetric, skewed to the left or skewed to the right. Use the whisker limits to determine whether any outliers present. c. State which central measure (mean or median) would be best to use to describe the centre of this distribution and provide the reason(s). [Hint: Refer to "Measures of Central Tendency" Lecture, slides 17 to 19 for the calculation of Q1 Q2 and Q3 as well as the whisker limits.] Task 3: Show the difference of write by female a. Construct side-by-side boxplots for the variable write by the variable female (i.e., the two groups are male and female). b. Calculate the Q1, Q2, Q3, interquartile range and whisker limits for the writing score (write variable) of the male group and female group separately. c. Use the respective median and inter-quartile range to compare the data position and variability or spread of the male and female groups separately.

Task 4: Show the relationship between the variable write and read a. Construct a scatter plot of write against read (i.e., values of write and value of read are on the Y-axis and X-axis respectively). b. Comment on the relationship, i.e., whether it has upward trend (i.e., as the value of read increases, the value of write also increases), no trend, or downward trend (i.e, as the value of read increases, the value of write decreases). c. Calculate the correlation coefficient of write and read variable and determine the strength of the relationship. Task 5: Perform the regression analysis of the variable write and read. a. Use the Excel Regression function in the Data Analysis Tools Add-ins to create a simple regression model. The straight line equation is y = a + bx where y and x are the variable write and read respectively. b. Determine and interpret the Coefficient of Determination, i.e., R square. c. Determine the regression equation. Interpret the slope. d. Perform the hypothesis test to determine if the slope is significantly differently from zero at 5% significance level. From the tasks above, you should have some idea of the relationship between write and read. Also, you can see the difference of the writing score (write variable) for male and female. In this section, write a short report summarising your main findings.
