You were given a sample solution that contains: 0.5 M NaCl and 1 mg/mL serum albumin (protein). Your task is to reduce the salt concentration of this solution without lowering the protein solution, using dialysis. Before preparing for dialysis, you saved 1 mL of sample (BEFORE- dialysis) to measure the salt and protein concentration of the initial sample.
In our case, you put 4 mL of sample solution in a dialysis bag and place it in a one-liter beaker filled with distilled water, and set it on a magnetic stirrer adjusted to gently mix (no heat) at least for two hours. After 2 hrs, you transferred the contents of the bag to a small clean beaker and measured the concentration of salt and protein after the dialysis. Refer to the lab instruction for the methods used for Protein and salt concentration.
The dilemma.
Your lab partner who was recording the concentration measurements forgot to indicate which measurements belongs which sample!! You and your partner do have all the necessary data- and it was confirmed that the dialysis worked by the TA while you were taking the measurements. So the TA allowed that you use the values that you took but you have to figure out which values fit in which cell of the following table to show that the dialysis worked and justify your reason for choosing the value for each cell. For example, the sample before dialysis should have values (and colors) that indicate high concentration of salt and protein and the water after dialysis should have more salt than initial pure distilled water.
Here are the values and colors that you obtained.
Color observation:
- Clear (2 samples)
- Medium Purple (2 samples)
Conductivity readings (pay attention to the units):
- 5 S/cm
- 80 S/cm
- 5 mS/cm
- 70 S/cm
All data is provided to solve
Table 1: Result of dialysis
sample | Colors | conductivity readings (units & exponents) |
pure distilled water | ||
sample before dialysis
water outside dialysis
sample after dialysis |
For this part of the lab report, you need to fill the cells in Table 1
