You will find below three examples of the text of real laws (with minor modifications for this exercise). Your task is to analyze each of the sentences or phrases of each of the texts and identify where the texts serve any of the following functions:

1. Impose a duty on someone

2. Give someone discretionary authority

3. Make something true with a declaration

4. Attach a test, condition, or exception to a duty, discretionary authority, or declaration

You can indicate your answers by noting which of the above four functional options you have identified by entering 1, 2, 3 or 4 after a sentence or phrase.

Example 1

Country: Socialist Republic of Vietnam

Provision:

Article 30 of investment law which identifies sectors in which investment is prohibited

Text:

Investment activities shall be prohibited in the following sectors:

1. Projects which are detrimental to national defence and security, and the public interest.
2. Projects which are detrimental to historical and cultural traditions and ethics, and Vietnamese customs.
3. Projects which harm the people's health, or which destroy natural resources and the environment.
4. Projects for the treatment of toxic wastes brought into Vietnam.

This provision shall not apply to projects sponsored and implementedby the Ministry of Interior.

Example 2 Iceland

Article 33, Regulation No. 990/2017 on the operation of remotely piloted aircraft

Text

• 1. It is prohibited to fly a drone at a height of more than120 metreswithout a special permission from the Icelandic Transport Authority.
• The form to be use by applicants for permission to fly a drone above 120 metres shall be the officialRegistration form for drones and application for special permissions.
• 2. The base fee for the issuance of an authorization of exemption of article 12 in Regulation 990/2017 permission to fly a drone is specified in section 14.1. inIcelandic Transport Authority tariff.
• Public authorities designated by the Minister of Transport shall be exempt from this provision, provided that operation of a drone in excess of 120 metres is for a purposes within their mandates.

Example 3

Country: Republic of Ireland

Provision, Article 28 of Irish Law on Adoption

Text

1. A consent to the making of an adoption order is not valid unless it is given:
   1. After the child concerned has attained the age of 6 weeks;
   2. Not earlier than 3 months before the application for adoption; and
   3. The authority shall satisfy itself that every person whose consent is required to the making of the adoption order, whohas not been disqualified by lack of capacity or other documented reason, has given the consentand understands the nature and effect of the consent and the adoption order.
