You will select an example case from Coleman and Kays essay Prototype Semantics: The English Word Lie. Then you will analyze that example case using the traditional analysis of the concept of lying. Specifically, you will apply the traditional analysis to the example case to determine whether or not that case is a genuine instance of lying. Instructions Select one of the following example cases from Coleman and Kays essay (31): IV. The Katerina Case V. The Schmallowitz Case VI. The Valentino Case Add a sixth paragraph to your essay that presents the case you have chosen and explains why it is or isnt a genuine case of lying (according to the traditional analysis). If it is a case of lying, explain how all four conditions are met. If it is not a case of lying, explain which condition(s) is not met. Write an introduction that clearly states what you are going to analyze in your paper. Place this introduction at the beginning of your paper. (This introduction is distinct from the first paragraph of your rough draft.) Add a conclusion that clarifies the outcome of your analysis in some way. For example, you might want to emphasize that you are simply showing what the traditional analysis implies about the case and that the right thing to say about the case might actually be different than what the traditional analysis implies. Place your conclusion at the end of your paper. Writing Guidelines 1. Stay focused on your analysis task. You are not trying to argue that your example case is or isnt a lie. You are simply showing what the traditional analysis implies about that example case. Those are very different things. (E.g., it may actually be a lie even though the traditional analysis implies that it isnt because the traditional analysis might be wrong.) 2. Make the structure of your paper obvious to the reader. This paper has two distinct parts. In the first part you are explaining the traditional analysis of the concept of lying. In the second part, you are applying that analysis to a specific example. You can make this structure obvious to your reader either with headings for these two parts or with some kind of transition sentence that tells your reader that you are moving from one part to the other. 3. Keep your introduction brief. Your only goal is to make the purpose of your paper clear to your reader. Avoid writing an abbreviated version of your whole paper in the introduction. Just state your objective and then move on into the body of your essay. And be specific when you state your purpose. If you are going to show that your example case is not a genuine lie (according to the traditional analysis), then you should say so in your introduction. 4. Dont hesitate to write in the first-person. You are the one doing the analysis so its perfectly acceptable to say that you are. (E.g., your introduction might begin like this: In this analysis paper, I will...) 5. Make sure that you cite the Coleman and Kay essay appropriately. Whether you quote them directly or simply paraphrase their example, you need an in-text citation that informs your reader of your source. And you will also need a Works Cited page with an entry containing the full bibliographical information about their essay. For this paper, use MLA style.
