You work for a healthcare organisation that is helping people who are at risk of serious health problems. The clients in your care are vulnerable to infection and because of this, certain precautions have to be made.
Arthur is an older client that is wheelchair bound and he needs constant support in getting out of his bed, getting around, and with showering and toileting. During the night he wears a continence pad, and he has a buzzer on the side of his bed that he can press when he needs support in changing pads.
You have only recently started working with Arthur and you notice that often his continence pad is not changed until around 10 or 11 in the morning. He presses his buzzer during the night, but often there is no response. Because of this, he often tries to get out of his bed himself. You notice that his sheets are often dirty and that he is not always clean. When you try to support him by showering him and changing his pad, you notice that there is a lack of gloves available.
You must:
- Identify the infection hazards that are present in this situation, and
- Identify your responsibilities and what you need to do to ensure the client is treated hygienically and with care
