Your boss asks you to create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and start the foundation for Risk Analysis meeting Monday. She states to identify tasks for Systems Analysis and Design. Our course is all about Systems Development, and it is based on the SDLC-System Development Life Cycle. The SDLC structures the course, so we are following the steps of SDLC as a learning structure. To get an overview of SDLC you can look at the e-text or in Bb Module 1 folder I provide a one-page overview of the SDLC. This will give you an idea of SDLC tasks and the order in which they must be completed. Review the Historical Data Spreadsheet for 9 specific SA&D tasks. These 9 tasks have durations for three past system projects- Accounts Payable system, HR system, and a Payroll system.
Note that Carlie asked you to identify tasks for Systems Analysis and Design (SA&D) of Service Information Management System (SIM)...not for SIM itself. Tasks for SIM would include: Setting Appointments, Scheduling Technicians and Ordering Parts. This will be important for HW4,5&6 assignments...Not for HW3.
To create a WBS: Identify Tasks, Determine Durations, Determine Relationship of each Task with other Tasks. Then create Gantt and PERT Charts.
How to use the Historical Data in the spreadsheet
There are three past projects Accounting, HR and Payroll. Each provides durations for the same 9 SA&D tasks: Interview Process (NOTE: NOT interview job applicantsthis is fact finding), Develop Questionnaire, Identify Risks, DFD Diagram, UML Diagram, Layout Report, Layout User Screen, Test Plan, Implementation Plan. These tasks are from various phases of the SDLC. The three historic projects have used these 9 tasks. Use these 9 tasks in your WBS for SIM. Use the historical durations and the formula provided to estimate the durations for these tasks for SIM System Analysis and Design.
There are more than these 9 tasks needed to complete Analysis and Design. Boss specifically states to include: System and Industry Analysis, System Design, Implementation Plans, and Security Tasks. There is no historic data for these tasks so you must estimate these durations on your own. Just take your best guess.
Now you have a Task list and durations, determine the relationship--successor, predecessor, concurrent...What order to perform these tasks? Which must be completed prior to starting another? Are there any tasks that can be done simultaneously?
