Your firm, Smart Guys Inc. (Smart) has been retained by a larger mining company to assist them with the planning, design and construction of a large uranium mine in Northern Ontario.

The mine project will be a large undertaking. The mine itself will be over 8000 hectares in size, require the relocation of a part of highway, and also require the relocation of several electricity transmission towers. A large number of lakes and streams will also be impacted.It is estimated that it will take 5000 workers and 3 years to build.

One the partners in the firm has asked you to prepare a brief summary of the various environmental and construction permits that will be required to build the mine.

1. Overview of why Environmental Permits are required.Think about the impact to society and the environment. Think about what our society (and environment) would look like if there were no environmental regulations or permits required
2. Overview of why Construction Permits are required. Think about the impact to society. Are permits used to ensure that buildings and structured are designed and constructed properly? What is the duty to public safety here?Can you give some examples of types of permits and the authorities that may be require them?
3. List at least 10 types of permits, including the Ontario Individual Environmental Assessment Process, that will apply to this project. The permits you list can be environmental, planning, construction, or health/safety related.
4. Put the permits into a three column table, with one column listing the permit, one column with a description of what it is for and who issues it, and a column listing what regulation says the permit is required
5. Provide a summary of the Ontario Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) Process.Include a flow chart. For the flow chart, it is ok to include an already published figure as long as you reference where it came from.
