Leaving home as an 18-year-old adult female was so far the toughest transition for me, even over becoming a mother. Without proper preparation, it is challenging to navigate all the components of being an adult. Three of the most common manifestations include:

  1. Denial of Conflict:Any feelings of fear, anger, failure, etc. are overridden by a furious need to stand alone, to "prove" oneself capable, to not need anyone for anything. A young person denying any of the conflicting feelings often pushes for independence sooner than non-adopted peers and pushes away from the family forcefully. This can leave parents feeling rejected and bewildered and can set up a breakdown in the parent-child relationship that can be difficult to mend.
  2. Paralyzing fearof leaving home results in a "self-fulfilling prophecy" of failure and refusal to leave and/or frequent return trips to the parent's home. Adolescents who become paralyzed by their fears of leaving home can regress in their behaviors, fail in school, and become incapable of sustaining themselves outside of their parents' homes.
  3. The inability to planfor or think about leaving results in the self-sabotage of positive steps towards independence and is replaced by a set of circumstances that force the leaving to occur in an unplanned crisis. The crisis can be unplanned pregnancy, delinquent or criminal behavior, substance abuse, or other behaviors that set up the youth being "thrown out" by the parents (Young Adults Leaving Home, 2023).

As a woman transitioning into my own independence, there were legitimate fears. What happens if something needs to be repaired in my home, what if something breaks in my car? I had been taught how to budget my money, how to cook, how to work hard, and how to clean, but anything outside of those was foreign to me. I had to learn how to build relationships, use my resources, and be okay with asking for help. This stage was a very pivotal time in my life. In my opinion, it was the most emotional and mental growth so far in my life.
