Your three roommates are not planning to go home for Thanksgiving this year. Since they had such a wonderful time last year at your mom's thanksgiving, you Invite them home with you again this year. You call your mom and asks her to set extra places at the table. She gladly agrees. Including your roommates, your mom is now expecting 12 people for dinner. She expects each person to eat 1.5 pounds of turkey. She plans to buy a 18 pound turkey and she remembers turkey was selling for $2 per pound last year and expects the price to remain the same. At the store, she finds that turkeys are selling fast and price has gone up to $2.50 per pound. There aren't many turkeys left, she buys the only one close to the size she wants, which is 20 pounds. Right before you leave for home, two of your roommates flake on you and decide to go to a fancier thanksgiving party. At dinner, there are a total of 10 guests, each guest eats on average 2 pounds of turkey. After dinner, you help you mom to clear the table and notice that she looks upset. You've seen this look. It means that you've messed up. You ask her if something's wrong, she says "oh...nothing". Undaunted, you press on, she fires back: "I planned for three extra guests and only one showed up". Required: Do a detailed variance analysis on cost of leftover that explains to her why the 2 friends who didn't show actually helped with cost of leftover being $0, which is what bothered her last year
