Youve been selected by the practice manager of Saved From the Grave Medical Group (SFG), to explore the possibility of implementing a new electronic medical records system (EMR). SFG is an independent primary care physician group serving your local community, in conjunction with three local hospitals. The practice receives an electronic file from the hospitals each week, which list patients who have received services from the hospital (ER visits, hospital admissions, lab or X-ray services, etc) so the practice may be aware of the activity, and may make notations in the patients chart. Some anticipated benefits of the EMR include: A more complete and efficient exchange of information between the practice and hospitals, which should reduce costs and result in healthier patients Prescriptions can be sent to local pharmacies electronically Patients could access their medical records using a web browser or mobile device, via a patient portal, allowing more convenient scheduling, services, etc. for busy families The practice is owned by 5 physicians who range in age from 35 through 70. The rough cost estimate to implement the EMR is approximately $350,000 (about $70,000 per physician), which includes anticipated software and hardware updates, as well as user training. A business case has not yet been developed potential benefits and costs have not yet been documented. However, recent changes in the law are forcing medical practices to implement electronic medical record systems at some point in time practices will be penalized by the government if they dont comply. The physicians are skeptical because they believe that their current paper system maximizes their ability to see a high number of patients each day, not to mention the cost. The mix of patients who visit SFG consists of: 30% retirees who generally have fixed incomes and have Medicare coverage 50% families with medium to high incomes and have private insurance, and 20% low-income families who have Medicaid insurance. 1.
