■■ Stereotypes can be created spontaneously from random bits of information. In one study (Martin et al., 2014), information about novel social groups was passed down a chain of individuals. What was initially a random set of associations evolved into information about the group that was simplified and categorically structured. Over time, new stereotypes eventually emerged that were easy to learn and allowed for generalizations to be made with any prior exposure or knowledge to the social targets.
