Exercise – Ask the students to use Table 7.2 in Chapter 7 to work through the arithmetic of supply chain fluctuations. A blank table is included in the PowerPoint slides for this chapter. Put on the OHP and work through it with the students. By getting them to calculate exactly how much needs to be produced at each stage in the supply chain during each period, they can get an idea of the amplifications in activity levels. This is increasingly referred to as the ‘bull whip’ effect.
