Question:

In Exercise 2.98, we mention that either Joey Chestnut of California, US, or Takeru Kobayashi of Japan has won the Nathan€™s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest every year from 2002 until 2011. In five of those years, both men competed and the results of the rivalry are shown in Table 2.22. (After the tie in 2008, Joey Chestnut won in an overtime.) Because the conditions of the year matter, this is a matchedpairs situation, with the two men going against each other each year. In a matched-pairs situation, we use the summary statistics of the differences between the pairs of values.

Table 2.22

Takeru Kobayashi Year Joey Chestnut 2009 64 68 59 2008 59 63 54 49 2007 66 2006 52 32 2005

(a) For each of the five years, find the difference in number of hot dogs eaten between Joey and Takeru. For example, in 2009, the difference is 68 ˆ’ 64 = 4. Since it is important to always subtract the same way (in this case, Joey€™s value minus Takeru€™s value), some of the differences will be negative.
(b) Use technology to find the mean and the standard deviation of the differences.
