Question:

In our increasingly technology enabled jobs and organisations, people are still key to success. It is relatively easy to raise the capital needed to buy machinery or advanced software for our organisations, compared to the challenges of achieving a high-performing workforce full of highly engaged and motived people, who are giving high levels of customer service, productivity and innovation in their work. New generations of employees, who are often highly educated and tech-savvy are looking to work in organisations that satisfy a variety of their needs. from pay to job satisfaction and promotion prospects, and moreover they are very prepared to move on if they are dissatisfied or can see a better opportunity elsewhere. With new advanced technologies becoming pervasive In our workplaces, managers will have to motivate their workers differently to in the past such as to get the most out of those technologies, and contribute effectively to process improvement and innovation, well beyond just doing routine work. Managers will need to satisfy a variety of peoples' needs at increasingly high levels in order for their organisations to reach their goals. As work changes because technologies become capable of doing routine processing work in all industries, we humans will need to engage with our work in different ways, both cognitively and emotionally. We will have opportunity to do more thinking and be more creative, and this requires different motivation to just going through the motions of routine process work, whether it be in a shop, factory or call centre. Leading companies such as Toyota expect everyone to engage in continuous improvement and problem solving, and they train people for those activities. Question As a manager in the future, what techniques will you use to help those around you to be highly motivated, and to engage with new technologies, and how does this relate to the things that motivate you?
