Book Summary: Are you a leader, manager, or sponsor of a lean project team? If so, this book is written specifically for the frontline members of your team.Written in a simple, engaging, and non intimidating style, this book introduces the key concepts underlying Lean Six Sigma to the frontline members of your project team. The first chapter of this book covers why the involvement of your frontline employees and physicians is crucial to the success of your lean project(s). The second chapter introduces the concept of "waste" which in Lean is any task, activity, or expense that does not add value to the product or service being provided to your customers or patients. This chapter also discusses the eight forms of "waste" and provides examples of such "waste" in the healthcare setting. The third chapter discusses the different types of approaches (i.e., walking the "gemba", value stream mapping, etc.) that can be used to identify whether there is "waste" or "MUDA" within a process, department, or organization. The fourth chapter discusses the most common tools and approaches that can be used to identify the causes of any observed "waste" (i.e., 5 WHYs, Fishbone diagram, etc.). The fifth chapter discusses different strategies and approaches that can be used to eliminate each of the 8 different types of "waste". Approaches such as poka-yoke, kanban, load leveling, 5s, and more are discussed. A decision grid is also provided to help team members decide which tools or techniques should be considered to help reduce or eliminate identified "waste". The sixth chapter discusses what a "change agent" is and why project team members are often called upon to help implement the changes the project team has recommended. Strategies for being a more effective change agent are also discussed. The final chapter is a call to action for your team members. A glossary of key Lean Six Sigma terms is also provided. After reading this book your team members will have the knowledge and understanding of Lean Six Sigma they need to tackle with confidence any Lean projects they are assigned.About the Author:Scott has had over 35 years of management and leadership experience in healthcare.
