A recent study by a respected psychologist, Daryl J. Bem (Cornell University) claimed to find evidence for the existence of extrasensory perception, or ESP. Dr. Bem’s results showed relatively small effects; for example, in one experiment in which subjects were asked to identify a picture hidden behind a screen, 53% gave the right answer versus the 50% expected by pure chance. Nevertheless, Dr. Bem claimed that the results were statistically significant, and his results were peer reviewed and published in a respected scholarly journal.
