Michelle is a speech-language pathologist (SLP) at a local rehabilitation center in a busy urban New England community. Because of ongoing expansion by the rehabilitation agency over the past 5 years, the speech-language pathology department has employed speech therapy assistants to help manage the clinical caseload. As a supervisor, Michelle has found that these assistants are dedicated and able to implement treatment plans and procedures that she has taught them. Of late, Michelle has found that her own job has spread her thin across agency committees, task forces, and the new satellite birth-to-3 program across town. As a result, she finds that she is less often able to directly supervise the speech assistants and she relies on telephone and e-mail consultation to review client data sheets and case notes. After talking with Nicole, one of her especially talented speech assistants, Michelle has allowed Nicole to modify a treatment plan for three adults with aphasia even though Michelle has not directly seen these patients in the past 4 weeks.
