Question:

Read carefully the following extract from an article by Sir Christopher Soames (one of the British Members of the European Commission in Brussels) published in European Community, January 1973.

I feel both honoured and grateful to have been invited to contribute to this issue of European Community. This is, after all, no ordinary issue. January 1973 will be a date to remember, the date when Europe was enlarged and a new milestone in its history reached. For those of us in Britain who have from the beginning had no doubts that our country's future lay in partnership with our European neighbours, it is also a moment of profound and sincere satisfaction. The road to here has been long and ai times frustrating;

but we have now arrived and a new chapter, the real chapter, is opening.

The eyes of the world are very much on the governments ar..d servants of Europe. Our old friends and allies in the Western World know what we stand for and what we believe in. They see only good in the emergence of a stronger, more coherent Europe. They know too that this new Europe will exert her influence, a benevolent influence no doubt, but one that will have its own distinctly European flavour.

The developing world too, has the right and the intention to look to Europe for generosity and imagination towards them. It must never be said that our Community has as its sole or primary preoccupation its own enrichment. It hasĀ·much to give, in experience, in technical skill, in manpower, in example. The Third World should and will benefit.
