7. Searching for Overall Organizational Pattern. This exercise requires you to determine whether a piece of writing is inductive (indirect) or deductive (direct). Remember the admonition of this chapter: When the purpose or aim is up-front or immediate, the structure is deductive; when the purpose, aim, or main conclusion comes later or last, the movement is inductive. Certainly, some forms of communication will be unclear as to purpose or aim. Apply those principles to the following kinds of communication:
