The W. Atlee Burpee Co. was founded in Philadelphia in 1876 by an 18-year-old with a passion for plants and animals and a mother willing to lend him $1,000 of “seed money” to get started in business. Today, it is owned by George Ball Jr. One of Burpee’s most demanded seeds is corn. Burpee continues to increase production to meet the growing demand. To this end, an experiment such as presented here is used to determine the combination of fertilizer and seed type that produces the largest number of kernels per ear.
