585, 60 L.Ed. 987 (1916), involved a claim by a pump manufacturer that a competitor had damaged its reputation by telling customers that plaintiff’s pump infringed defendant’s patent. The Supreme Court held that there was no federal jurisdiction over the suit because the claim did not arise under the federal patent law, but rather was a state cause of action.
