13.50 Psychologists, housewives of New Jersey, and a spurious correlation: An online tool, Google Correlate (which shut down in 2019), reported a correlation in regional Google searches in the United States between the word “psychologist” and the phrase “housewives of New Jersey season 4,” a reference to the reality television show. The reported correlation was huge: 0.848. Google Correlate would take a term you typed in, such as “psychologist,” and report every other search that had a high correlation with that term. Some of the correlations were expected, but every once in a while there was one like this.
