Question:
1. Find a peer with whom you can share a paper you have written in psychology. Have that person write a critical review of your paper. Once you have read your review, try to follow the suggestions in this chapter in responding to it. Next, write a revision, including the cover letter, outlining how you have addressed various points raised by your reviewer. Finally, meet with your peer reviewer to discuss the revision process. Repeat these steps, but this time you take on the role of the reviewer who evaluates and comments on a peer’s paper.
This exercise allows you to get an idea of both sides of the process: receiving and responding to a reviewer’s comments and taking the perspective of a reviewer. The exercise also includes the added benefit of allowing you to talk with your reviewer to get an inside perspective on how he or she came to write their review comments.
This step does not occur in the actual reviewing process but serves here as an added way to deconstruct the commentary process.
