In 2015 Kaspersky Lab, a provider of digital security software, commissioned researchers to conduct an international survey to better understand how the use of digital technology aects the way people recall and use information. The researchers discovered a phenomenon that they called Digital Amnesia: forgetting information that you trust a digital device to remember for you.
Here are some of the more specic ndings.
● More than half of adult participants could remember the telephone number of the house they lived in at age 10, but could not remember their children’s numbers without looking them up.
● When asked a question, a third of participants would conduct an internet search before trying to remember.
● One quarter of participants would forget an online fact shortly after using it.
● Digital Amnesia was equally present in all age groups.
Digital technologies, the researchers conclude, change the way we think, learn, behave and remember.
