Piaget’s theory of cognitive development is sometimes referred to as “genetic epistemology”. In fact, it was Piaget’s intention to use systematic observation of children’s cognitive development to tackle much wider issues of epistemology (theory of knowledge).

● Can you name examples from dierent areas of knowledge that illustrate such phenomena as egocentrism, irreversibility and centration?

● Can you name TOK concepts that are related to these phenomena? (Hint: for example, consider conrmation bias and selectivity of perception).

● Does the history of scientic views (from antiquity to the modern era) resemble the stages of maturation in a child’s cognitive development? For example, think about the parallel between children’s performance on the conservation task and the law of conservation of matter.
