When several CO ligands are present in a metal carbonyl, an indication of the individual bond strengths can be obtained by means of force constants derived from the experimental IR frequencies. In [Cr(CO)5(PPh3)] the cis-CO ligands have the higher force constants, whereas in [Ph3SnCo(CO)4] the force constants are higher for the trans-CO.
