During the early part of the twentieth century, a major social movement known as the eugenics movement occurred. The purpose of eugenics was to improve the quality of the human gene pool by eliminating “bad genes” from the population. Universities taught courses in eugenics, states passed laws that allowed certain persons to be sterilized against their will, and judging contests were held at state fairs to determine the family with the best characteristics. Hitler’s concept of developing a “master race” was an extension of this thinking. Scientists who study evolutionary processes have thoroughly discredited eugenics.
