Bullying is the repeated physical or psychological mistreatment by a peer who is physically or psychologically stronger than the victim. Dan Olweus cites evidence showing that the victims of bullying are more likely to attempt suicide than are children in general (and far more likely than are the bullies themselves). This appears to be the dramatic statistic that has encouraged schools to show more interest in providing programs aimed at reducing bullying. Does this mean that being bullied causes suicide attempts? What other explanations are possible?
