The evolution of the hospital traveled a long, tortuous road, struggling along a hazardous path from India and Egypt to Greece and Rome, to the Islamic countries, to England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and on to America.

■ The existence of hospitals is evidence of a high degree of civilization, in which people are interested not only in the well-being of themselves and their families but also that of the greater community.
