11. There was a sharp increase in the number of the longterm unemployed following the recession that began in December 2007. Rand Ghayad did the following study to better understand long-term unemployment. He sent out 3,600 fake resumes in response to 600 job openings. He varied the length of time his fake applicants had been out of work, how often they had switched jobs, and their work experience. He found that the longer the “applicants” were out of work, the less likely they were to be offered an interview.
