In this experiential exercise, assume that you are a public school teacher and the education union that represents teachers in your school district has voted to strike over teacher pay because the increase in pay offered by the school district was deemed unacceptable by the union negotiators. During the strike you will not receive your salary for teaching, and the union will assign you to picket duty where you will be stationed on a busy street corner in your town and asked to display a sign to passing cars that informs citizens that the teachers are on strike. Would you be an enthusiastic supporter of the strike and volunteer to help the union win its battle with the school district over teacher pay? During the strike the school district decided to hire temporary teachers to keep classes staffed so that the schools remain open for students while the full-time teachers are out on strike. Do you think the school district should be able to hire temporary teachers to work with your students and replace you while you are on strike for higher wages? Would the use of temporary teachers during a strike prolong the strike and put pressure on teachers to give in to the demands of the school district? Be prepared to share your answers to these questions with the class.
