Smyrna University was founded as the fourth university of Turkey and the first university of the Aegean region, in accordance with the decision of the “Turkish Ministry of Education” under the law 6595 in May 1955. The rapidly growing university not only supported the well-educated workforce of the Aegean region, but also was the only research and education institution that contributed to the commercial, health, social, and cultural development of the Aegean region. Soon after the establishment of the Turkish Higher Education Council in 1981, the university separated into two universities. While Smyrna University continued its academic activities under the same name, a new government university named September University was founded in 1982. This new university was the second state university of the Aegean region and founded with faculties that transferred from Smyrna University.
Smyrna University has played a vital role in the establishment and development of new universities since 1982. The university played a fundamental role in education for the Aegean region and in 2001 it became the guarantor for the foundation of the first private university in Izmir. Today, Smyrna University represents Turkish universities in the “500 Leading Universities of World” and according to the evaluation of “University Ranking by Academic Performance,” the university is the fifth leading educational institution in Turkey (http://www.hurriyetegitim.com/kurum/100401 5144/izmir/onlisans-lisans/egeuniversitesi.
