At one university at which the author was previously employed staff were requested, if they were making private calls, to prefix the number that they dialled with ‘77’. They were subsequently issued with an itemized personal bill that they were required to pay. The bill listed the numbers dialled and the names of the people or organizations called, and the cost of the call.

If this is how private calls were logged, could this be the same for all other calls that university staff make? For what other purposes could telephone number information also be used? How would you feel knowing that this information is being gathered?
