The contrast between users and supporters generates very different images of the conditions under which individuals will offer assistance to one another in the workplace. For the user orientation, there are strong expectations of reciprocity (‘I’ll scratch your back, if you scratch mine’), while the supporter orientation relies on norms of indirect exchange (‘what comes around, goes around’). Identify organizational conditions under which each type of social exchange becomes more likely.
