Mechanism Carbonation Hydrolysis Hydration Oxidation Table 2 Chemical weathering Results Water combines with carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid. The carbonic acid chemically alters the rock, so that it dissolves. Water, usually in the form of rain, disrupts the chemical composition of the minerals, destabilizing the rock. When water combines with compounds in rock, the mineral's grain will be physically altered. Oxygen combines with compound elements in rock to form oxides and weaken the rock.
