A part of being a successful mediator is the mediator’s capacity to:

a. Exhibit confidence and competence in presenting oneself as dependable in addressing the conflict.

b. Make sure that blame and responsibility remain associated with the parties in the conflict, not in the mediator.

c. Identify the conflict elements and characteristics for the participants in order to assure clarity and specificity in identifying conflict problems.

d. Carefully manage the communication of each party so that the emotional and behavioral impact is removed from the dialogue.
