Read the following discussion and give your response:
Social class has a HUGE influence on family, for it defines the amount of time, money, and effort that is allotted to the family as a whole, as well as the number of members that this includes. Coming from a upper class family, finances are more even distributed amongst the household and therefore the opportunities available not only to the children to better themselves, but the parents to increase the value of their own lives are more abundant and more easily attainable. Upper class families that are still able to conform to the traditional view of a family are able to provide more resources and time to their children and the advancement of their skills than those families that come from lower even middle class who are either divorced, unwed, or single parents since, despite their best efforts, simply cannot provide the equivalent time and opportunities to their own children (Sawhill, 2013). Lower class families struggle with the concept of how to distribute their finances. They often times have to focus on what is the most promising attribute of requests made by the children, and many parents work long or odd hours simply to make ends meet and do not have the time or finances to apply to important family time. This lack of ‘quality time’ can greatly affect a child’s social skills and therefore their future abilities to function properly within society. A child’s first social interaction occurs within the home, and they grow and learn from within the home on a constant, year round basis. According to Curran, the availability of education also has a huge impact on a family’s ability to move up in society. Although education is viewed by a lower class family as a way to move up to middle class, they often are financially unable to obtain the proper education required to make that move. They often graduate and do not seek to further their education with a more advanced degree, often seeking to begin work to help out their families immediately afterwards, or being forced to have to begin to work and not being able to pursue a more advanced degree due to lack of time and finances.
