You will watch a performance of Tina Turner, and you can see the mirror image of Beyonce. Much of what we listen to, is indeed reflected back again. Two perfect examples, I heard Amy Wine house and I loved her because she modeled herself (almost exactly) after Ronnie Spector.

When I heard Rolling in the Deep, by Adele, it was as if I knew the sound. I remember loving these songs, because - I have heard them before, they echo Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and our earlier performers. Adele's 21, one of the most sold albums historically in the UK, is a story --the album is beautiful - it fits together. Similar to the Beatles or Carole King's Tapestry. Take a look at the performances, and the documentaries. Your texts do have SOME information on the formation of the women of rock, but I actually found it a little disheartening, that the textbooks we are using I really could not find a good section about women, except for bits and pieces. So when writing about the performer of your choice, please feel free to do more research, just please cite your sources correctly. You can use the index of your texts, and search. Lastly, a few questions I want you to think about. Many of the women talk about having a "look", with the girl groups even having to go to charm school. I think one of our documentaries, talked about that. Think about this for women and performers today.

Do women musicians need a certain look to be a woman rock star? Is that important for music? What made these women successful? Why are they all icons in their own right? How do you think these women helped spark a new independence for women of their time-and maybe even still today? I close this module with two songs, Respect, a song written by Otis Redding that resonates with many people still today. Why so? and the beautiful "Natural Woman" written by Carole King- which has become a power anthem for women everywhere.
