1. A frictionless piston-cylinder device initially contains 50 L of saturated liquid refrigerant 134a. The piston is free to move and its mass is such that it maintains a pressure of 500 kPa on the refrigerant. The refrigerant is now heated until its temperature rises to 70C. Calculate the work done during the process. 2. Steam enters a long, insulated pipe at 1400 kPa, 350 C and 10 m/s and exits at 1000 kPa. The diameter of the pipe is 0.15 m at the inlet and 0.1 m at the exit. Calculate the mass flow rate of the steam and its speed at the pipe exit. 3. 15 kg of air is compressed isothermally at 20 C from a 0.1 m volume to a 0.01m volume. The initial pressure is 1 bar. What is the work done? 4. In an adiabatic nozzle, does the temperature of the fluid increase or de- crease? 5. Carbon dioxide enters an adiabatic nozzle steadily at 1 MPa and 500 C with a mass flow rate of 6000 kg/h and leaves at 100 kPa and 450 m/s. The inlet area of the nozzle is 40 cm. Determine the inlet velocity and the exit temperature.
