Assume that your RTO has recently developed a plan to improve environmental practices. As part of this plan, each staff member is to conduct a short sustainability assessment of their work area. You therefore to complete a sustainability assessment for your own work area within the RTO using the Sustainability Assessment Form. This could mean your classroom and other areas you use such as recreation areas. Completing the assessment will involve you: Identifying the environmental/sustainability legislation for the state or territory you live in and defining its purpose. Using the sources of information provided under "required" to find out how to assess a business' environmental impact/practices and briefly summarising this. Looking at as many areas of your work area as possible to identify workplace environmental and resource efficiency issues. You will also need to identify at least two actual or potential workplace environmental hazards. Identifying and documenting all of the resources you use when you are at the RTO, considering your own environmental impact. Choosing at least two of the resources you have identified and measuring your/your RTO's usage of these resources. You could use any of the apps at the links on the previous pages to measure usage, as well as any other apps relevant to the resources you have identified. Identifying improvements to existing practices. When you have completed your sustainability assessment, save your work as Completed Sustainability Assessment Form. You will discuss this at a round table meeting with other students at a time and date advised by your assessor.
2. Round table discussion
In a group round-table style discussion with a student group of approximately four or five, you will analyse the results of your sustainability assessment with others and share ideas on ways to improve environmental practices in the RTO. Each person will have a turn (10 minutes per person) to talk about their sustainability assessment.
With your group participants, share and discuss strategies for improving environmental practices in your area of the RTO. Your assessor will be looking to see that you can: articulate your ideas about sustainability, including reporting on the results of your sustainability assessment. work as part of a team to identify possible environmental improvements demonstrate effective communication skills including: o Speaking clearly and concisely o Using non-verbal communication to assist with understanding o Asking questions to identify required information o Responding to questions as required o Using active listening techniques to confirm understanding o Following the meeting, complete the final section of your Sustainability Assessment Form to record ideas the team came up with.
