1. Open Data Many governments are choosing to release, in machine-readable formats, data sets currently held by the government (and which do not contain personal information). They create open data portals where you can find tens of thousands of data sets from that government. You can find these portals online for various federal, provincial, and municipal governments, some of which are quite useful. Open Data is not usually released with a specific purpose in mind. We can't predict what uses people will find for raw data; the idea is that the public will find uses that move beyond the interests, scope, or capabilities of governments. Imagine you would like to take your mini-venture (from assignment #1) and grow it into a larger, successful business. Identify three open data sets that you expect would be useful in informing your decision-making. For each, tell us: - What government provided the data - What the data is (you may use their description, if you wish, with proper citation) - Where to find it (direct link) - What you think you can learn from the data - What decision do you think it might help you make, and how it will help For example, if your mini-venture was an umbrella rental service, you might describe one of your three data sets like this: Rainfall data - Government of Canada "This dataset contains adjusted daily rainfall (R) and snowfall (S) data from all Canadian stations reporting rainfall and snowfall for which we have metadata to do the adjustments." (Government of Canada, 2018) https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/d8616c52-a812-44ad-8754-7bcc0d8de305 I could use this data to learn which areas of Canada get the most rain, and which areas have the most rainy days. To grow my mini-venture I need to expand outside of Halifax, and this dataset would help me decide where my next location should be. (You would not use such a simple example, and will need to provide substantially more explanation). Be sure to also include a brief summary of your mini-venture to provide context (this can be copied from your first assignment). We expect you will need 250-500 word count. This is an individual assignment and must be completed without consultation with your mini-venture group.
