Using the link above, do a search on your own communities (where do you live and where d.o you work?) and wri-te a paragraph on the Indigenous Communities you discover. Tell me about their land and connection to the environment. You can go to the Tribal websites. Has the history of your Indigenous community been forgotten? Honored? Preserved? How so? Is their language still spoken? How can awareness of Native History change your understanding of the place you call home? If you are from a Latin American culture (Mexico, South America, the Caribbean) don't forget you have Indigenous ancestry and quite possible African ancestry as well.

I will be basing my community search on Thermal Ca, given that I grew up in that area and currently work in Coachella Ca. According to the search my community is tied to the Cahuilla Indigenous community.The Cahuilla Indeigenous people are a prominent and active community throughout the Coachella valley. As a matter of fact, I know from attending Desert Mirage High school that in Thermal there is a Native American Reservation by the name of Torres Martinez. According to my research the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians is a recognized tribe of Cahuilla Indians. I know from seeing their powwows and their performances at graduation ceremonies that the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians are very involved in the community. They actually had their first performance at the famous "Coachella Fest" this past April of 2022. The elders from this community are trying to preserve their language within their people so that they can fortify their culture. As stated in their official web page they are also trying to preserve their culture through their dance, songs, preparing burials and dinners. Knowing that the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians are going above and beyond to keep their culture alive is amazing given that they've inhabited the area since the early 1800's. Having some basic knowledge of Native History makes me appreciate the place I call home. I now see the culture and history, as opposed to when I only saw a piece of land. I see the effort that the indigenous community has put into honoring their history and I think that it's amazing their legacy continues to grow with the new and upcoming generations.
