10. The path from the reporting of a crime to the final settlement of the matter can be long and complex. Once someone reports a crime, the police must verify that a crime has in fact been committed. Then a suspect must be identified and apprehended. If the prosecutor decides to file formal charges against the suspect, a judge or magistrate must inform the accused of the charges. If the charges are serious enough, a judge decides whether or not the case falls within the jurisdiction of the court. If so, the case is then sent to a grand jury. The next step is that the grand jury decides whether or not a trial is justified. If it is, the grand jury issues an indictment. Next, the accused is arraigned, or officially informed of the charges and of his or her rights. Eventually, the case is brought to trial.
