1.What is the smallest number of staff required to produce at the required rate?
2.What would happen if the average demand (a) fell to 380, or (b) rose to 580 Brudburgers?
Description
The Bruddersford Engineering Co. Sports and Social Club was planning a double celebration. Not only was this the 50th year of its existence but they had at last been able to extend the pavilion (and bar facilities). The committee were planning a Gala to mark the occasion of the opening of the new building. Various events had been planned, including the finals of the inter-department cricket and bowls matches, children’s races, etc.
Since the Board had made a modest grant towards the costs, and in the hope of attracting more members than usual, it had been agreed that no admission charge would be levied and that some at least of the refreshments would be provided free. A debate followed on just what food should be served. Eventually, after discussion, it was decided that a de-luxe hamburger, to be known as the ‘Brudburger’, would be the most acceptable to the majority of visitors. To keep within the budget, the committee decided that these delicacies would be produced by volunteers – after all, it was a Sunday, and hence the catering staff would otherwise have been on double time.
The average attendance at the Annual Gala over the last five years was 160. However, they were reasonably confident that three times as many would be tempted by the free admission and snack. Entrance tickets would be issued and would entitle the Holder to a free “Brudburger’. Since the event was planned to last for seven hours, it would be impractical to prepare all the burgers in advance. Equally, sudden surges in demand would cause long queues. The tickets would therefore carry ‘times’ to ensure a reasonably steady demand.
Experiments were carried out to ‘prove’ the recipe and manufacturing method. Seven operations were identified and the chairman called for seven volunteers to staff the “Brudburger’ stall. However, a maintenance fitter on the committee, pointing out that assembly line jobs in the factory were ‘balanced’ in some way, suggested that if this were done, fewer people would be required.
List of operations and times 1. Cook filling 0.35 minutes 2. Toast bun 0.46 minutes 3. Mix special sauce 0.48 minutes 4. Place filling on bottom of bun 0.24 minutes 5. Smother filling with sauce 0.26 minutes 6. Place top on filling, sauce and bun 0.16 minutes 7. Wrap bun, serve and collect ticket 0.40 minutes Total 2.35 minutes
