2. 10000lb/h of H2SO4(Cp=0.36) is to be cooled in a two stage counter current cooler. Hot acid at 174C is fed to a well mixed tank and is in contact with cooling coils. The continuous discharge from the tank is at 88C flows to a second stirred tank and leaves at 45C. Cooling water at 20C and at the rate of 7740lb/h flows into the coil of the second tank and then to the coil of the first tank. The water is at 80C as it leaves the coil of the hot acid tank. (a) To what temperature would the contents of each tank rise if due to trouble in the water supply, the cooling water supply is suddenly stopped for one hour? (b) On restoration of water supply, water is put on the system at the rate of 10,000lb/h. Calculate the acid discharge temperature after one hour. The capacity of each tank is 10000lb of acid and the overall heat transfer coefficient in the hot tank is 200CHU/hft2 C and in the colder tank U=130CHU/hft2C. Heat transfer area of the coil in hot tank =A1=69.3ft2 and in cold tank =A2=95.8ft2
